We hope you are comfortable in the seats here at Tower City Cinemas. Because you won't be able to move from yours during the last 40 minutes of THE WELL. An only child on an Outback farm, frail, crippled Hester grew into spinsterhood with few friends and family members. The middle-aged Hester impulsively adopts Katherine, a gawky, adolsecent orphan, intending to raise the girl in the same arid, closed universe of narrow love and dependence Hester shared with her long-departed governess. Induced to sell her land, Hester amasses a small fortune and moves with Katherine to a small cottage on the outskirts of the property. Outside squats a disused well, whose rusted cover pulsates, groans and shudders. LIke something alive. For a time the pair live in this splendid isolation, Hester always keeping Katherine under close watch. Then, during a rare night out, a terrible accident happens - Katherine's fault. The well willingly swallows the evidence. But the next day brings shocking discovery. Something in the well seems to be groaning, shuddering. Something still alive. From darkest Australia comes a foreboding pyschodrama which stirs the suspense of "Shallow Grave" and "Les Diaboliques" with a uniquely feminine twist on repression and deceit.
