"Just act normal, all right?" is one of the most ironic lines from Bob Gosse's tragicomic road movie, in which normality got left well behind several milemarkers back. Seth is the browbeaten shoplifter son of a toothless ex-convict, forbidden even to use the telephone. Marcy is the daughter in a wealthy, shady family involved in the New York State sanitation racket; furthermore, she's diagnosed as a "bio-psycho sociopath with Tourette's syndrome" and could violently and profanely lash out at anyone in moments of stress. Of course, it's love at first sight, and when Marcy can't find a Black Barbie Styling Head in the local shops, their shared destiny seems clear: a crime spree across the border, to Canada, where Torotnot's more cosmpolitan toyshops surely must carry the coveted item. As a wanted fugitive, however, Marcy can't get her medical prescriptions filled, and soon she's succumbing to bizarre neurological tics and seizures. Seth has problems of his own. "That's right, I hit you with a fish, " the tow-truck driver tells him, 'and you're a better man for it." Crossing the median from stark drama to absurdity to pure visual poetry, and back again, NIAGARA, NIAGARA takes the viewer on an exhilerating, unpredictable ride.
