Felicitously helmed by onetime Clevelander Joan Micklin Silver, A FISH IN THE BATHTUB is a sparkling domestic comedy that rings true for anyone who's ever endured a family, a relationship - or cherishes the durable husband-and-wife acting team of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, front and center as the Kaplans of Brooklyn, wed and seemingly content for 40 years. But the boredom of retirement turns Sam Kaplan into an irascible, impulsive grouch. For Molly Kaplan the last straw (one of them, anyway) comes when Sam buys a large, live fish from the market and lets it have the bathroom. Molly moves in with their son and his wife, a marriage itself imperiled by young Joel Kaplan's flirtation with a sexy client. "Fighting with somebody is better than not having anybody to fight with at all," a widowed neighbor ruefully advises Sam. The trouble is, she's set her sights on him, just as Molly starts dating a gentleman in her drivers-ed class, and just as Joel considers fooling around himself. Silver-plated with warmth, sympathy and sprightly humor, A FISH IN THE BATHTUB is the catch of the year.
