What's a law students to do for extra money and unusual excitement? Get a job in a morgue, of course, which is exactly what Martin does. On his first day at work, he hears tales of moving corpses and necrophilia from the retiring guard and, later, meets a police inspector who is trying to solve a string of brutal mutilation murders. Fear and fascination keep Martin involved and awake during his latenight hours at the morgue, even after he realizes someone is deliberately trying to drive him crazy, and the murder investigation leads to him. With the help of a prostitute, Martin starts his own investigation, and gets uncomfortably close to the killer. Director Bornedal abandoned his career as head of drama for the Danish state radio and television network to make this film, his feature debut. A brilliantly made thriller put together with the skill of a surgeon, shot in unsettling yellows and barely noticed tracking shots, NIGHTWATCH is full of frightening twists and screams that never stop. In Danish with English subtitles.
