DEADLY MARIA

Tom Tykwer's brilliant film debut excels in its use of innovative camera work as a means of wxploring his heroine's inner world. Maria lives an exceedingly quiet and uneventful life as the daughter of a malicious, bedridden father and as the wife of a disinterested, pedantic husband. She has no other companions or friends. A motherless young girl growing up in a purely maLe and overly repressed environment, Maria spends years collecting insects and bad experiences, following a precise ritual of housework, and writing letters to an imaginary lover. Only he is privy to her most intimate thoughts and memories. Then one day an incredible thing happens: Maria falls in love. This is going to be a wonderful revelation...and a recipe for diasaster. The pure craftsmanship of Tykwer's direction, along with superb performances by some of Germany's finest actors, makes DEADLY MARIA a polished and intense film that should not be missed. In German with English subtitles.
