SWEET EMMA, DEAR BOBE

Emma and Bobe have fled the Hungarian countryside for a better life in the big city of Budapest. Initially hired as Russian teachers at the same school, they find themselves victims of political change when the compulsory study of Russian is abolished. Not to be deterred, the two innovative women take English classes in the evening, and then teach their students the phrases they've just learned the next morning. Nevertheless, their once golden opportunity has suddenly tarnished, and their financial circumstances are growing worse. After selling many of their non

essentials, Bobe starts to pick up men in hotels in the hope of at least having a nice dinner, and Emma falls into an unsatisfactory affair with a married man. SWEET EMMA, DEAR BOBE marks director Istvan Szabo's return to his Hungarian roots in this exquisite, deeply felt story of two women caught in the tides of change in post-Communist Eastern Europe. In Hungarian with English subtitles.
