LIKE A BOAT OUT OF WATER has at its center the nine-year-old Fabien. He and his parents live in a trailer, because the father is a construction foreman who moves around the country to wherever there is work. Fabien never gets used to the moving around, and the latest move is the hardest. After a sun-drenched season in the south France, the family packs up and goes north to industrial fog, cold weather, and even more frigid people. School is hell, and the other students are demons, He seems to bring out all their racism; he is called "Romaniche"- the none too nice slang term for Gypsy-and is shunned and mistreated in the hurtful ways that children know best. When Fabien meets real Gypsies, they at first mistrust him as a "Gadge" or outsider. But soon friendships develop, and together they begin to plot Fabien's revenge against those who have made his new life so miserable. In French with Engilsh subtitles.
