The classic La Ronde situation in modern Manhattan: a fascinating, circular narrative traces successive love and lust partners in an erotic mystery tour across New York's social, racial and gender boundaries. The circle links a nightclub singer and a Latino laborer, the jaded wealthy and powerful and a teen runaway living day to day. As the title suggests, sex itself is not as important as the act of desire, and some of these intimates even manage to avoid touching each other (as in an unforgettable long distance liaison between voyeurs in adjoining skyscrapers). Writer/director Lopez seems to invert the Surgeon General's warning as he asks: "Do you want everybody they've ever wanted?" A great cast, lush photography and splendid soundtrack aid in the seduction. C.C.
