17TH INTERNATIONAL TOURNEE OF ANIMATION

Year: 1982
Country: Canada
Run Time: 120 minutes

This year's Tournee departs from its traditional international format to pay tribute to the National Film Board of Canada's 42-year history of prize-winning production. The selection of 21 animated shorts represents the "creme de la creme" of Canadian artistry. Innovative styles and techniques of new works are complemented by the inclusion of favorite classics and a fascinating look at how three leading animators create their unique art. The 17th Tournee's emphasis is on humor, beginning with Norman McLaren's OPENING SPEECH. McLaren, father of Canadian animation, uses the special effect of pixillation in this hilarious battle between man and microphone. The program's highlights include the 1982 Oscar nominee THE TENDER TALE OF CINDERELLA PENGUIN who wears her glass flippers to the ball! Dutch artist Paul Driessen's award-winning CAT'S CRADLE weaves Greek music into a gothic fantasy about a heroic spider. Caroline Leaf is shown working with her own developed technique of oils-on-glass for THE STREET, an award-winner beautifully illustrating Mordecai Richler's story. A little Jewish boy impatiently waits to inherit his grandmother's room only to be haunted by her when he gets his wish. The Tournee retains its global touch through the varied national styles of its contributors, such as Danish artist Kaj Pindal and Dutch artist Co Hoedeman, who are seen creating new characters in their studios.
